In recent weeks, the South African Customs Service (SCS) has received about 1,200 packages containing the drugs in question.
The drugs are called Viagra and were seized from a warehouse in Mpumalanga on Wednesday, SCS officers confirmed.
During the operation, the products which the seized were labelled as having a “stronger” chemical component than the branded Viagra. It is unknown if this is the result of an international customs clearance or an unknown source.
The products were being imported into South Africa via the South African International Trade Border Force (STB).
The product is packaged in blister packs and the packaging contains no indication of what type of packaging or materials the drugs will be in, the products were labelled as having a “stronger” chemical component and will not be packaged in the same blister packs.
SCS officers have been notified to check the packaging for any counterfeits. The products are also being tested to see if they are counterfeit and are believed to have some chemical ingredients.
This has been a serious and long-running incident and the SRS has seized more than 400 packages of products, including counterfeit Viagra and fake tablets, from the warehouse.
A special operation team was deployed to check packages, take a picture, report suspected packages to the customs office or police.
This type of action is not normally part of the SRS’s regular operation.
On Tuesday, the SRS conducted Operation Policing in Mpumalanga to intercept the shipments of packages from the warehouse to the Customs Service.
